A Midsummer Night's Dream
by William Shakespeare; producer Brian Matthew
15-17 June 1961, Deepdene, Oxenden Wood Road
As with Twelfth Night the year before, the Players performed Shakespeare in the spacious garden of the Hansens’ house in Chelsfield Park. This was a musical production, co-ordinated by Terry Henebery, and the fairies were played by dancers brought in from the Irene Ayres School of Dancing. Brian and Pamela Matthew took the parts of Oberon and Titania, with Brian also assuming his customary role of producer. He was assisted by Teddy Hollands, who also played Philostrate in his final appearance with the Society, having been present since its foundation in 1936 and been a highly praised leading man in the 40s and 50s. |
