RL Stevenson’s classic tale is dramatised by Jeffrey Hatcher, with (like every other adaptation for non-print media) huge liberties taken with the original story to make it workable as a stage production. Friends of Dr Henry Jekyll become concerned about his relationship with the mysterious but universally reviled Edward Hyde especially as it affects his feud with Sir Danvers Carew, an incompetent rival surgeon (who is a respectable and innocent victim in the original story). In this version, Hyde is played by four separate actors, each representing a different, suppressed, aspect of Jekyll’s personality released by his experiments with what Carew calls “suspect tinctures”. With Hyde and, increasingly, Jekyll spinning out of control, a violent denouement seems inevitable. |
