Pygmalion
by George Bernard Shaw; producer Brian Matthew
9-11 November 1961
Pygmalion is one of a few plays that the Players have produced more than once. This, our first effort, starred Pamela Matthew as Eliza – a role for which she might have seemed too old, although it has been suggested that leading roles were ‘reserved’ for her when her husband Brian Matthew was the producer. To be fair, finding actors of the right age (and sometimes sex or race) is always a problem for small theatre companies and compromises often have to be made. According to all reports, Pamela was a fine actress so she might well have been the best candidate for the role. The Players’ second production of Pygmalion was performed in 1986. |
