The Happy Prisoner is based on the 1946 novel by Monica Dickens, in which a family comes to rely emotionally on the son Oliver, who has lost a leg during the war and becomes confidant to all. Oliver begins to enjoy his new role as a self-proclaimed counsellor. Taking his advice, his sister Violet, an independent spinster, unexpectedly accepts a marriage proposal from a local farmer. Her marriage is a success and Violet finds a new happiness, but soon Oliver’s meddling in his family affairs goes too far. Will his risky instructions save or ruin his other sister Heather’s marriage, which is at the brink of crisis when her husband comes back from Australia after a few years of separation? Will Oliver learn to accept his new circumstances? Will he finally face reality and start to rebuild his own life? |
