The Schoolmistress
by Arthur Wing Pinero; producer Harold Hart
25-27 November 1971
This was Chelsfield’s first attempt at a farce by Arthur Wing Pinero, who was a celebrated playwright in the 19th century but whose star has since waned. The Schoolmistress, which opened at the Court Theatre in 1886, depicts the complications at a girls’ boarding school when the headmistress secretly leaves to pursue a career on the stage, leaving her feckless husband in charge. While noting some criticisms, the performance was warmly praised by the Kentish Times. |
